LONDON—August 24, 2005— SirsiDynix announced today that following an extensive evaluation process, Northumbria University, located in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, has selected the SirsiDynix Horizon Consolidated Searching and SirsiDynix Horizon Link Resolver software to fulfill its resource and discovery portal requirements. SirsiDynix partners with US-based companies WebFeat and Serials Solutions, respectively, for the supply and implementation of these two solutions.
Prior to publishing its tender document, the university spent much of 2005 researching the federated search and OpenURL Link Resolver market. Professor Jane Core, director of Library and Learning Services at Northumbria University, said, "We chose the SirsiDynix solution after a rigorous evaluation procedure. It meets our objective of simplifying access to over 400 databases and 10,000 electronic journals with an intuitive, easy-to-use search interface. As well as improving access for our users, we wanted something that was professional and cost-effective to administer. The impressive management information facilities of the SirsiDynix hosted solution will help us to track usage of our electronic resources to ensure that we are getting value for money from our e-resources budget."
Horizon Consolidated Searching enables library users to search dozens of databases in a fraction of the time normally required, without needing to master numerous different user interfaces. Therefore, use of the software not only saves time for users, but also saves staff time as users need much less training in the use of the single interface.
Horizon Link Resolver easily allows library users to connect to full-text articles in e-journals, aggregated full-text databases, secondary databases, and bibliographic record indexes. The product is fully integrated with the Horizon Information Portal and Horizon Consolidated Searching and provides a clear, intuitive user interface laid out simply and clearly. Provided through an ASP-hosted model, Horizon Link Resolver does not require the purchase and maintenance of servers and software, and there is no knowledgebase to populate. New customers can be up and running in under one month.
Mark Carden, SirsiDynix vice president, said, "This is an important moment for SirsiDynix and its technology partners WebFeat and Serials Solutions. From the success achieved outside of the UK, we have long known that our resource and discovery portal is rated by librarians as one of the most comprehensive, flexible, and feature-rich solutions available. So it is with great pleasure that we welcome the librarians, students, and researchers of Northumbria University as users of our portal."
