HUNTSVILLE, Ala.—September 22, 2005— SirsiDynix announced today that Joplin Public Library in Joplin, Missouri, has selected the SirsiDynix Horizon Library Management System. Impressed by Horizon's features and benefits for both patrons and staff, the library chose SirsiDynix technology to improve access to its information resources for its users.
"We are enthusiastic about the new features that will become available next year with Horizon 8.0," said Linda Cannon, Joplin's collection development librarian and SirsiDynix system administrator.
"We've been a Dynix library for many years, and we weren't going to be happy with something that didn't give us a substantial improvement over what we already enjoyed," said library director Carolyn Trout. "We looked at every system out there and saw lots of pretty bells and whistles, but Horizon's superb functionality sold us."
About Joplin Public Library
The Joplin Public Library was founded in 1902 with the third Carnegie grant awarded in Missouri. The current
building was opened to the public in May 1981 and was extensively remodeled in 1995. The city of Joplin serves
as the retail, medical, and employment center for the tri-state area of Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas. As
the largest public library between Springfield and Tulsa, the Joplin Public Library attracts users from the
entire tri-state area. More than a third of the library's circulation is to non-residents.
The collection includes approximately 110,000 items in print and non-print formats. In 1992 the library chose Dynix as its first automation system. Off-site dial-in access became available in 1995, the same year that the library started offering free Internet access to patrons. In 1999 the library introduced access to its catalog via the Internet.
