European Parliament Selects SirsiDynix Symphony for Library Management Solution

December 3rd, 2009

LONDON, December 3, 2009 – SirsiDynix®, the global leader in library technology solutions, announces the European Parliament has selected SirsiDynix Symphony®, for their integrated library management system (ILMS). The unique library, with branches in Brussels, Belgium, Luxembourg and Strasbourg, France, provides a rapid, non-partisan information service in all the official languages of the European Union for members of the Parliament community.

“We are looking forward to having a modern ILMS that expands access to our resources, both online and in our Reading Room in Brussels”, said Alfredo De Feo, Director of Library and Document Management at the European Parliament. “We offer our community multiple information products, so it is critical that all of our resources – from current information about the activities of the European Union and its Member States to related briefings, databases and news agencies – are available on demand.”

Symphony’s technical architecture and comprehensive solutions were key factors in the European Parliament’s choice. “Symphony should allow smooth integration into our existing technical environment, it seems to offer efficient workflow through tools such as MARC data download with pre-filled order records and a large number of predefined reports, and gives our staff a high degree of flexibility and customization. We are confident that the coming months will confirm our impressions,” said De Feo.

The European Parliament, with the Council of the European Union, is the legislative branch of the EU, and has been called one of the most powerful legislatures in the world. The European Parliament Library offers resources supporting parliamentary work and the development of professional knowledge and skills, including a large collection of monographs and serials relating in the main to European policies and institutions, and the general economic, social and political situation in the Member States. Resources are accessed by the Parliament’s President, the Parliament’s administration and Secretary-General, committee and voting members and rapporteurs, and their staffs.

“SirsiDynix global teams work diligently to ensure our solutions fit the needs of libraries of all types and sizes, all over the world, and European Parliament Library’s Symphony selection demonstrates our commitment to the technology’s versatility, developed on a robust, proven architecture,” said Matt Hawkins, Chief Operating Officer for SirsiDynix. “We are honored that our technology will be a component to the success of the influential legislative body, and are confident in Symphony’s capability to strengthen the Library’s position as the information resource for the legislative community.”

Symphony incorporates open, industry-standard technologies, offering libraries an expansive list of features and capabilities. These include an open n-tier architecture, software-as-a-service (SaaS) options, powerful search and discovery solutions, comprehensive integrated library management and productivity solutions, Java-based staff clients for all modules, fully documented application programming interfaces (APIs) that support unparalleled customizability and integration capabilities, Unicode support, advanced business intelligence and reporting tools, support for API, SIP2 and NCIP and embedded and full Oracle database support.
