Libraries in Clackamas County (LINCC) Implements SirsiDynix® Symphony®

August 28th, 2008

PROVO, Utah, August 28, 2008 – SirsiDynix, the global leader in strategic technology solutions for libraries, announces that the Libraries in Clackamas County (LINCC) in Oregon has successfully installed and begun operations using the SirsiDynix® Symphony® Integrated Library System (ILS), SirsiDynix® e-Library™, SirsiDynix® Director’s Station™ and SirsiDynix® Web Reporter™ business intelligence tools, and other solutions. After implementation services, comprehensive training and consulting of over 250 library staff, LINCC went live with the SirsiDynix flagship system on July 30th.

LINCC (Libraries in Clackamas County) is a system of 10 independent city libraries and one county library that cooperate together to share a centralized SirsiDynix Symphony system with a single patron and bibliographic database. LINCC’s 11 libraries are located in 13 physical buildings throughout Clackamas County (located in the greater Portland metropolitan area) and serve a population of 362,000 with a total annual circulation of 6.5 million items from a shared database of 1.3 million item records. Symphony is LINCC’s fourth integrated library system since 1983, so they are quite experienced with the migration process, implementing over the years Ulisys, Inlex, Dynix Classic, and now Symphony.

“When we began to investigate the possibly of migrating from classic Dynix after a lengthy evaluation process we found that nothing surpassed the level of functionality we experienced with Dynix Classic until we found Symphony,” said Joanna Rood, Manager of the LINCC consortium central office. “In many ways this migration was our best ever. Symphony provides us with excellent public-library functionality and has dramatically increased the flexibility we need to meet the needs of our diverse consortium members. Our implementation was methodical. We studied the Symphony configuration possibilities, tested our data, and evaluated and learned the software through our training and consulting. By the time we went live, we felt everything worked well, which was spectacularly amazing! We look forward to our continued partnership with SirsiDynix.”

“LINCC’s implementation faced many challenges: a complex system, an expectation that staff be up-to-speed by the launch date, and an aggressive budget and schedule,” said Matthew Hawkins, chief operating officer for SirsiDynix. “LINCC came to the table prepared, and our team met their challenges to deliver. This success story demonstrates both SirsiDynix’s and LINCCs commitments to provide solutions to Clackamas County libraries and the community they serve that are uncompromising in excellence.”

Gary Rautenstrauch, chief executive officer for SirsiDynix, added, “our relationship with LINCC is particularly valuable. LINCC’s successful launch demonstrates that Symphony solutions are robust enough to handle the complex needs of a cooperative library system, yet agile enough to be swiftly implemented in a cost effective manner. Our team looks forward to an ongoing productive partnership with LINCC, as their team embraces the new technology in order to provide the best service to their community possible.”

Symphony incorporates open, industry-standard technologies, offering the library community the most impressive list of features and capabilities. These include an open n-tier architecture, software-as-a-service (SaaS) options, powerful search and discovery solutions, comprehensive integrated library management and productivity solutions, Java-based staff clients for all modules, fully documented application programming interfaces (APIs) that support unparalleled customizability and integration, Unicode support, advanced business intelligence and reporting tools, support for API, SIP2 and NCIP and embedded and full Oracle database support.

About LINCC

LINCC is a consortium made up of the libraries from the following ten cities: Canby, Estscada, Gladstone, Lake Oswego, Molalla, Milwaukie, Oregon City, Sandy (including a branch in Hoodland), West Linn and Wilsonville and the Clackamas County Library which includes branches in Oak Lodge and Clackamas Corner. In November 2008 the voters of Clackamas County approved a Library Service district covering the majority of Clackamas County that will provide stable adequate funding for public libraries in the County on a permanent basis. Besides sharing county-wide funding, the major cooperative feature of LINCC is that the eleven independent libraries share a single library computer system. The unified computer makes it very easy for individual citizens to borrow materials from any or all libraries throughout the county and to have those materials delivered to their neighborhood library for easy pick-up. This shared system and shared county-wide funding has created a seamless public library system in Clackamas County that has greatly facilitated the cost effective sharing of resources among these eleven library “partners” yet allows each local city or county library to retain its own autonomy and ability to tailor its collection and programs to the unique needs of its clientele.
