McMaster University Selects SirsiDynix – Again

June 24th, 2010

PROVO, UTAH, June 24, 2010 – McMaster University Libraries have a number of major technology initiatives underway for their academic community, according to Jeff Trzeciak, University Librarian. The migration to SirsiDynix Symphony® is just one of them.

The University wanted a true twenty-first century library system that did not need to be managed itself, said Trzeciak. “We want to focus on the human side of technology.”

SirsiDynix announces that celebrated public research institution McMaster University, Ontario, has selected Symphony after using SirsiDynix Horizon. The University, whose academic accolades include recognition as Canada’s most innovative medical-doctoral university, opted for SirsiDynix’s software-asa- service solution.

The University Libraries have two major technology learning centers underway: a state-of-the-art new media commons for undergraduate students, and a Center for Digital Scholarship for graduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral research.

“Innovation for learning and research is a hallmark for McMaster, so that is where we prioritize,” said Trzeciak. “SaaS makes that possible: we get improved ILS capabilities, plus we get our IT staff back. With no ILS servers and software to maintain, they can support the technology that counts most to us.”

The University explored a number of options, including an open-source solution, before deciding to stay with SirsiDynix, according to Brad Whittle, vice president for SirsiDynix. They evaluated Symphony installed at other prominent academic institutions, including the University of Toronto.

“The University’s requirements were interoperability and ease of management,” said Whittle. “We’ve enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with the Libraries’ staff for years, so the choice was obvious. It is an honor to be a part of McMaster University’s continued record of academic excellence.”

McMaster University Libraries have decided to complete their migration by early 2011.
