SirsiDynix Announces Virtual Environment Support for Horizon 7.5 and Horizon Information Portal 3.20

December 10th, 2009

PROVO, Utah, Dec. 10, 2009 – SirsiDynix®, the global leader in library technology solutions, announces that SirsiDynix Horizon™ 7.5 and Horizon Information Portal™ (HIP) 3.20 are now supported when installed on VMware® virtual servers ESX 4.0 and ESXi 4.0.

“Some of our library customers using Horizon are already successfully virtualizing part or all of their automated operations, and with our performance tests and support commitment, we look forward to helping more libraries adopt the solution,” said Talin Bingham, Chief Technology Officer for SirsiDynix. “Libraries use virtualization to conserve IT resources and save on hardware costs, and we support the community in all efforts to do more with less and expand the utilization of technology resources.”

Benchmark tests were run comparing Horizon performance in a virtual versus non-virtual environment, using both Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Sybase ASE 15 databases. A similar test compared search times in HIP installed virtually versus in a non-virtual environment. The results of these performance tests have been published for SirsiDynix customers on the Client Care Portal, and are also available by request, to aid libraries in configuring virtual systems with Horizon and HIP.

Support for solutions installed in virtual environments will be offered on all future Horizon and HIP releases.

Libraries are increasingly adopting cloud computing and abstraction practices to save on capital expenses, and to have a more secure, reliable and scalable infrastructure that is also more environmentally sustainable. In addition to supporting virtualization practices, SirsiDynix offers the library industry’s most expansive Software-as-a-Service solution, with five datacenters located in four regions around the world.

The Horizon integrated library system provides a comprehensive solution for library management and productivity, with the HIP online public access catalog for search and discovery. Horizon incorporates industry-standard technologies, and open architecture for maximum library customization with minimum effort, as well as Unicode support, advanced business intelligence and reporting tools, support for SIP2 and NCIP and full Microsoft SQL Server and Sybase database support.
