Utah Valley University Implements SirsiDynix Symphony

September 24th, 2009

PROVO, Utah, September 24, 2009 – SirsiDynix®, the global leader in library technology solutions, announces Utah Valley University Library has fully implemented the SirsiDynix Symphony® Integrated Library System (ILS) in their new campus library. The technology upgrade was a critical project for the library, which was unveiled in 2008 as the focal point of the campus when the school was rededicated as a university in 2008.

“Every component of our new library was deliberately selected to reflect the latest in technology and design, from the inside out,” said Timothy Rowley, assistant director at UVU Library. “Symphony is the core component of our new library operations, offering enterprising access to information across the board. Staff can provide better, more efficient service to our students, and the university community has powerful access to resources that support their research and pursuit of academic excellence.”

The Symphony ILS and a host of complementary SirsiDynix solutions provide the library staff comprehensive cataloging, circulation, acquisitions and reserves tools. UVU library users not only receive better staff support as a result, but also now have improved access to the library’s expansive catalog through e-Library, SirsiDynix’s public access catalog solution.

The library exhibits an increased dedication to higher learning that drove the school’s initiative to become a university. The Utah Legislature awarded Utah Valley State College university status effective July 1, 2008. UVU embarked on its journey as a university with the construction of the new library, which was named the most energy efficient Utah state-owned building, winning two merit awards for green construction by Intermountain Construction in 2008. The library is vital in supporting UVU’s ongoing expansion of academic programs, including several new master’s degree programs.

“Our technology offerings are substantial. Thirty-five group study rooms – seven of them multi-media enhanced – the Fulton Information Commons, outfitted with technology for research and professional-quality media editing, and a media equipment collection with digital cameras, laptops and even iPods available for checking out,” said Rowley. “Symphony was the obvious ILS choice, not only because of SirsiDynix’s commitment to providing the robust, industry-leading solutions that matched our commitment to technology, but also because SirsiDynix was conscious of our budget and schedule requirements.”

Matt Hawkins, chief operating officer for SirsiDynix, said that SirsiDynix’s global resources were a key element in meeting UVU’s requirements. “SirsiDynix has world-wide resources working around the clock, which allows us to efficiently deliver solutions to every library, including over 1,400 academic libraries that use Symphony. Our teams are keenly aware of academic library schedule demands, and deliver fully operational solutions around school’s academic calendars, so the implementation process does not disrupt students. We understood UVU’s budget requirements after the significant resources spent constructing this remarkable facility. UVU demanded the best in library technology and we were determined to deliver what their users needed. We are pleased to be a part of what this impressive library offers to UVU as the university grows.”

Symphony incorporates open, industry-standard technologies, offering libraries an expansive list of features and capabilities. These include an open n-tier architecture, software-as-a-service (SaaS) options, powerful search and discovery solutions, comprehensive integrated library management and productivity solutions, Java-based staff clients for all modules, fully documented application programming interfaces (APIs) that support unparalleled customizability and integration capabilities, Unicode support, advanced business intelligence and reporting tools, support for API, SIP2 and NCIP and embedded and full Oracle database support.

About Utah Valley University

Utah Valley University (UVU), located in Orem, Utah, is Utah’s newest university, having obtained university status on July 1, 2008. From its start as a small technical college in 1941, UVU has grown to become the second-largest public university in Utah with more than 27,000 students. In addition to 58 bachelor’s degrees, 60 associate degrees and 21 certificate programs, UVU offers two master’s degrees in education and nursing.
